MUCH CHAOS OVER NBN DURING QUEENSLAND'S FLOOD CRISIS

Even as the world seems like all set to witness the next generation of advanced broadband connection coming into place, offering tremendous speed of as much as 40mb and more, there are still those who feel otherwise. For once, this scheme doesn’t come easy and cheap.

Although pretty promising and significant, there are other matters pressing enough that require the enormous sum as is being invested on the National Broadband Network (NBN) right now. Opposition leader Tony Abbott is even more ruthless when he states that the NBN should be immediately scrapped without even thinking twice. This is even as Queensland faces one of the most terrible times in its history after the wrath of floods that affected innumerable people there.

Broadband comparison site Compare Broadband asked its visitors as to whether the NBN should remain in place or should it be scrapped as suggested by Abbott. Interestingly, as many as forty eight percent of the people felt that the NBN plan should stay. While as many as fifty two percent felt that in accordance with opposition leader Abott’s opinion, the NBN should be scrapped.

This poll had as many as four hundred and sixty respondents giving their opinion. Sarah Routledge, spokesperson for Compare Broadband, stated as to how the public hasn’t yet been strongly convinced by either of the sides. The ones who are in support of NBC that is backed by the federal government, or for that matter the opposition that feels it should be immediately scrapped.

The Liberals leader mentioned at a recent conference that the NBN is rather a luxury much unaffordable right now. There are other matters which require immediate attention and financial spending. Social and market research company Your Source had also come up with a similar study that appeared on iTWire. Even here the results were rather neatly divided.

The gadget comes with a brilliant assortment of features and apps that may prove to be rather greatly useful to people. Even leading mobile broadband companies are looking at getting a piece of the pie by offering heavily discounted iPad contracts. CRTC MAY INTRODUCE USAGE-BASED BILLING TO THE BROADBAND MARKET

The body, Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has perhaps raised more than one eye brow of late. This is post a decision as made by it. The commission has seen a lot many complaints coming in from consumers and the Harper Government as well. For once, businesses and homes that use broadband will have to pay for Data that they use.

This is of course after a certain allowed limit is crossed. Apart from this they will anyways have to pay for the broadband packs they are getting. This has thus given rise to much speculation as is going on currently in the country. All the leading broadband service providers including Rogers, Bell, Telus and Shaw in the meanwhile still stress on the download speeds as being offered.

For them it is as simple as this, the faster your broadband is, the more you pay. But then there are bandwidth caps that have come into play courtesy the leading Internet Service Providers (ISPs). These are the biggies who have a stronghold over the market with covering as many as ninety five percent of it. Looking at an opportunity here, the relatively smaller ISPs have started to provide their customers with some brilliantly increased bandwidths.

Chatham, Ont.-based TekSavvy offers in its package, as much as 300 GB of bandwidth. This provides the users with greater flexibility and the freedom to do a lot more things and enjoying the opportunities as offered by the internet. But then this new decision, as made by the CRTC, will bring usage-based billing (UBB) into play. This will do away with the competitive advantage that these smaller ISPs have been enjoying.

This is bound to negatively affect smaller businesses which would have otherwise greatly benefited from the current scheme as being offered by the smaller ISPs. The small businesses had greater freedom in their endeavors of communicating with their audience, marketing and selling their goods to them among others.

The introduction of UBB will directly result in the cost of broadband rising greatly and to the much annoyance of the common people as well as small businesses which were heavily dependent on the internet.

CHRIS BARTON REFLECTS ABOUT THE NEXT GENERATION OF ADVANCED BROADBAND

There has been much noise and speculation going on surrounding the advent of next generation of broadband technology. The fibre optic broadband is here and bound to offer people with internet speeds as never before seen. But then at the same time, there have been many doubts over the promise as made by the government and if it has potently delivered.

A heavy investment of as much as $1.5 billion was made by the government assuring people of giving them access to ultra fast broadband speeds in the coming times. The question remains, are the people being cheated. A large portion of the tax payer’s money is given to Telecom. Apart from this, as much as $300 million worth of Rural Broadband Initiative money has been given to Telecom-Vodafone duopoly.
The National ultra fast broadband scheme seemed much promising and genuinely benefitting the people back then.

Today there is actually a fear that the common people might just end up with overcharged rates and under satisfactory services. At the heart of it, this so called super fast internet is rather being given to the cities and throbbing areas of the country. On the other hand the remote and small villages have to make do with meager speeds that are much pitiable.

The cities see for as much as $40 per monthly, wholesale delivering 30Mbps download speeds and 10Mbps upload speeds. Then there are the rural areas getting a poor 5Mbps. This figure is for eighty percent of the village households. The remaining ones get an even more slower1Mbps.

For once, post the digital switch over, one would do well to remember that those still subscribing to analogue cable and without the subscriptions to digital equipment may as well end up not receiving any TV signal.

The new digital services will require that most people get a Freeview or Freesat ready TV set. As for the older TV sets, they will need an external digital box as also offered by Freeview. Customers will be enjoying as many as 160 TV channels, 4,600 hours of standard and HD on-demand content, among a variety of other brilliant ad innovative features. This includes new apps and games for the TV. This new box is special though for it understands the user’s preference and accordingly also makes suggestions. Many even claim this to be the next generation of TV viewing at that. But then it would be still pretty early as to comment and one would do well to wait and see where this is heading to.

However, the Christmas period saw not more then a few hundred users signing up for the platform. One would still have to wait and see how well this platform scores with the viewers in general or for that matter how many more opt for it in the long run.

The main holding page shows links to the TV guide and VOD platform. One may see the current or last channel viewed. A carousel shows 24 picture links which being the recently searched/viewed programmes.

All of the services as provided by BT are seeing newer subscribers signing in.

the latest news here being that the BT hybrid IPTV service 'BT Vision' has seen an additional forty thousand subscribers joining in to enjoy the brilliant service that for once, comes as an entertainment package like no other. This addition has again been for the fourth quarter itself.

The total number touched reads 545,000 customers. For once, this figure has been the best in the past seven quarters. The growth has been in more than one ways even as BT has seen the Average revenue per user (ARPU) also going up to GBP 322 (USD 522) for the period, up GBP 5 over the previous quarter.

This is again for its residential customer base. A major contributor to this growth however has been the newer broadband customers who have joined in.

BT has seen some tremendous overall revenues in recent times. The company has come back into reckoning and big time at that. It is grabbing hold of newer customers by the day what with the brilliant packages that it offers. This includes for a number of its services.

This is right from TV, broadband to home phone. Even as BT Broadband Infinity Campaign is at the helm of things when one talks fibre optic broadband services, BT Vision is also doing well for itself. Another forty thousand people have signed up to the TV services, BT Vision. This number of newer subscriptions that the company has seen has been the best in the past two years.

The figure has again been for the last quarter of the year that ended on the 31st of December. The three months before that had the company adding another twenty four thousand customers which took its overall grand total to five hundred and forty five thousand subscribers.

The numbers have also been in favor of BT when it comes to broadband. Her too the company has seen as many as 188,000 subscribers. This has been the best figure in the past eight years. O2 Broadband price hike!

O2 Broadband has increased prices for the second time now in three months. The price change will be a high rise in some plans whilst some plans will see a very nominal low price rise. Recently there was a price hike due to the VAT rate being revised to 20%. Customers were still adjusting to the VAT increase and O2 has already announced another revision to its prices.

But O2 says this prise hike is very essential at this moment to help them continue with their investments.

According to a recent O2 statement these investments are very essential as internet has changed over years and the quality of service too needs to go hand in hand with this change. The needs of users are increasing each day be it in terms of speed or usage and O2 with these investments are trying to meet every requirement of its user. They also added that from the time they have introduced their Home Broadband and Home Packages they have kept a constant price level across all their different packages.

And along with maintaining these price levels they have made sure to not compromise on their service level. But now it is difficult to do so in this climate if the prices remain the same. Thus they believe the prices have to increase that small bit to continue their world class service.

The high price will be observed mainly on the old unlimited packages which O2 users have been enjoying at a nominal cost till date. But now there will be a high price hike to be able to meet the higher costs involved in delivering these unlimited packages.

There will be a standard hike of £5 on all the Access products. Again there is a high hike rise in the Access plan as O2 was previously offering this plan at a very low cost to gain customers at an introduction price. But now to cover up those losses, O2 will hike the Access plan by £5 straight.

The rest of the plans will see a low price hike. Home phone price will also be changing but the price changes will be nominal.

Broadband to now cost less in rural areas

Broadband in rural areas may get cheaper if Ofcoms proposal which it recently submitted to BT wholesale is agreed upon. Broadband is supplied by local operators but like any other business they are just distributors or franchisees of the main company. They buy broadband from a main company and supply it to different homes in UK.

And the most dominant wholesale supplier in rural areas right now is BT Wholesale who is currently supplying to numerous operators which in turn are supplying broadband to a population equivalent to almost 12 percent of the UK population. This means that BT Wholesale is supplying broadband to more than three million homes and businesses.

And in the rest of the 85 percent which is usually the urban population there are two or three more wholesale providers with the major competitor to BT being Virgin Media. Virgin recently announced its upgrade to a 30Mb broadband and it uses the cable network technology unlike BT's VDSL technology.

But now the price reduction may mainly be due to the new proposal Ofcom has placed for BT. The new proposal tell BT to reduce prices between 10.75% and 14.75% below inflation. This will not only benefit the consumers but will also be good for BT in the long run. The increasing competition is not only from big players like Virgin Media and other such names but also from local operators. These local operators are installing their own equipment which allows them to distribute broadband at much faster and cheaper rates than usual.

With the new proposal Ofcom plans to bridge the gap between the rates charged in urban and rural areas. They believe that the local operators (Internet Service Providers) after the price reduction will be able to invest much more in order to increase their broadband capacity and provide better and faster broadband to their customers.

Virgin Media upgrades to 30MB Broadband

Lightning fast internet will now literally mean lighting fast as Virgin Media introduces its new broadband service effective from the 1st of Feb which will provide consumers with 30Mbps speed which is 50% faster than the previous 20Mb speed provided by Virgin.

And Virgin promises that the consumer right from the first house close to the exchange till the millionth house from the exchange will all get the same broadband speed as promised. This is possible as Virgin does not make use of the VDSL technology as its competitors like BT infinity. Thus all consumers will get the same speed of 30Mb if they opt for that plan. This speed will be much faster as compared to the average speeds of BT infinity.

This new plan named XL from Virgin will be available to the consumers at a monthly cost of £18.50. The executive director for Virgin Media, Mr. Jon James looked very excited for the launch of this new speed and says they will effectively be able to meet the growing needs of the customers as the customers are now demanding more and more in terms of speeds and usage.

He also added that customers are in need of such high speed internet is also due to the numerous gadgets added to their homes. You will rarely find a home now with a single laptop or computer. Every house has a minimum of two gadgets, which will either be two laptops or a laptop and a handheld device or similar gizmos which Mr. Jon said consumers will be able to use without any speed drops.

Mr. Jon James also informed that the customers who are already with Virgin’s high speed 20Mb broadband can opt for the 30Mb upgrade at just an upgrade cost of £30 which will be a one off fee. With the extra £30, the customer will get the 30Mb upgrade and Virgins SuperHub DOCSUS 3.0 router and modem.
