THE TIVO REVOLUTION

The VOD medium has only made the competition more intense. The leading companies are at it big time, breathing down one another’s neck. Everyone, right from Sky, BT, Virgin to BBC are all looking at getting a one up over the other offering better and newer technologies to the subscribers and all at unbelievably reasonable rates.

BBC director general, Mark Thompson, spoke with much confidence recently when he went that their YouView Platform is going to create all the more noise like never before seen. Virgin Media has taken things much more seriously and already set with its offering, coming together with the reputed company TiVo.

They are offering a new high-powered set top box. Customers will be enjoying as many as 160 TV channels, 4,600 hours of standard and HD on-demand content, among a variety of other brilliant ad innovative features. This includes new apps and games for the TV. This new box is special though for it understands the user’s preference and accordingly also makes suggestions. Many even claim this to be the next generation of TV viewing at that. But then it would be still pretty early as to comment and one would do well to wait and see where this is heading to.

However, the Christmas period saw not more then a few hundred users signing up for the platform. One would still have to wait and see how well this platform scores with the viewers in general or for that matter how many more opt for it in the long run.

The main holding page shows links to the TV guide and VOD platform. One may see the current or last channel viewed. A carousel shows 24 picture links which being the recently searched/viewed programmes.

Then there is the learning engine, it keeps a track of the various programmes, genres and actors that a user may prefer more than others. It accordingly brings up content that they may thus enjoy viewing, giving its own suggestion that makes it revolutionary and interactive in a unique way. Another innovative offering here is the TiVo 'peanut' remote control which has unique features of its own.

BT Vision HD - BT has developed its BT Vision V+ Box which is HD ready, meaning it supports up to 1080i resolution
